I’ve often talked about your interactive whiteboard being your window on the world, and using it to transport your class to faraway places. You can do this with sites like Google Treks, Window Swap, and Drive & Listen. I’ve just discovered a new site to add to that list, City Walks Live.
With City Walks Live you are able to walk around different cities from around the world and listen to the sounds of the city. Choose a city from the sidebar on the right of the screen, and you can also choose day or night and whether you want to hear the sounds or not. You can also choose whether you want beach walks or not.
So if you’re studying a particular country in geography, or you’re reading about a particular city in a class story, then you could take your class on a walk around that city. Maybe you’re looking at different languages and want to explore the street signs. Perhas you could you use the walk around a city as a stimulus for some creative writing?

The site was created by programmers Aristomenis Georgiopoulos and Artemis Stiga during the Covid-19 lockdown as a way of allowing anyone to wander the world and explore new places while we stuck at home and unable to travel.
At the moment you can watch the walks, but there’s no way to pause or jump forwards and backwards in a walk. If you want to take a screenshot of something important you’d need to be quick. The adverts are not too intrusive and can be easily hidden.
The site is free to use, so take a look at https://citywalks.live and let me know what you think in the comments!
